Petition to put black boxes in cars unites thousands

A call from the Association of Road Traffic Victims to install a black box in every car, is getting a huge amount of support on the internet. More than 25 thousand people have signed a petition for this. The association wants the black box installed so that perpetrators of serious accidents can not "get away with community service". Last month Marvin Mennes (36) saw a video on television of Erik Derijks who threw a chair at a judge out of frustration after Polish motorist who ran over and killed his 2 year old daughter and her grandparents was sentenced to only 120 hours of community service. After seeing this, Mennes joined the Association of Road Traffic Victims and started the petition. The association wants a obligatory black box in every car. This box can, for example, keep track of the car's speed, which could make the cause of an accident very clear in court. In the case of Derijks, the exact speed could not be determined. According to Mennis, a black box in every car is not going too far. But the question remains whether politics is ready for a mandatory black box in all cars. The VVD, PvdA and D66 have critical questions regarding this. "Because how far do you go with that? Must one also be required to do an alcohol test before getting behind the wheel?" said Barbara Visser (VVD). She thinks more can be accomplished by changing the law.
