MP accused of government leak exonerated
The GroenLinks Member of Parliament Linda Voortman from Utrecht has been exonerated. According to the Public Prosecutor, she did not leak information on who was a candidate for the National Ombudsman position to the media.
GroenLinks suspended Voortman for a month this summer because she allegedly leaked information to the media regarding the candidate for he National Ombudsman position. At that time Guido van Woerkom was the only candidate. His nomination caused a lot of controversy among the Parliament Members and the Moroccan society in the Netherlands. Voortman denied the accusation.
According to investigators, there was a name in the email sent to the media that Voortman could not know. Under the circumstances the Public Prosecutor decided to no longer suspect her. It is still unclear who leaked the information. According to the Public Prosecutor, no other suspects emerged during the investigation.
Voortman came into the picture because she was one of the few MP's who had read the documents containing the names of the candidates. She also acknowledged that she had discussed the documents with other Parliament Members. The Public Prosecutor can not prosecute her for discussing the documents with her colleagues as the MP's also had the right to read the confidential documents.
