Senate debates public sector salary caps

Despite the Christmas recess, the Senate will be meeting tonight to discuss further curbing the top incomes in the (semi) public sector. As of January 1st Minister Ronald Plasterk of Internal Affairs wants the upper limit to be 100 percent of a minister salary (178 thousand euros). Currently the limit is at 130 percent. Initially the debate in the First Chamber would have been delayed, because the Senate was too busy. This would mean that the measure could not be put in place by January 1st. On reflection, a majority in the Senate found this incorrect. A large majority voted for the proposal in the Second Cahmber. This includes PVV, Group Bontes/Van Klaveren, ChristenUnie, VVD, one man faction Van Vliet, 50PLUS/Baay-Timmerman, 50Plus/Klein, GroenLinks, PvdA, PvdD, and the SP.
