Nearly 40% in poor neighborhoods feel unsafe

According to Statistics Netherlands, over 38 percent of residents of disadvantaged neighborhoods sometimes felt unsafe in their own neighborhood in 2013. This percentage is twice as high as the average for all Dutch citizens. Slightly more than 6 percent of the population in the 40 disadvantaged neighborhoods often feel unsafe, three times more than the average in the whole of Netherlands. Other indicators also reflect that residents of disadvantaged neighborhoods feel unsafe. One in 10 of them say they are often afraid of being a victim of crime. The average for the whole of the Netherlands is barely one in 25. Residents in disadvantaged neighborhoods much more often do not open their doors at night and feel unsafe when home alone at night. They will also often walk or drive further to avoid unsafe place.
