Man dead in police custody: another A'dam overdose

A man died from an apparent drug overdose Sunday morning, while in custody of police in Amsterdam.

The 22-year-old man and a friend were found at Reguliersgracht; as both were unwell they were taken to a nearby hospital.

Police were informed shortly after that he had left the hospital; he found closeby. The officers advised him to return, which he refused, saying that his car was near Amsterdam Arena.

The officers took him to the police station, where he was allowed to sleep it off while they checked on him regularly.

A few hours later he became unconscious. An ambulance was called and he was taken back to the hospital where he passed away.

Police suspect that the victim and his friend –who remained at the hospital- had ingested bad drugs. Detectives are investigating where they acquired it, while the National Investigative Department is looking into how someone could have passed away while in police care.
