"Cannabis stench" leads police to €27k cash
Police in Maastricht bagged almost €27,000 in cash on Monday after a traffic stop at Steynboeckel. One man was arrested on suspicion of money laundering activities.
Police say the car the men were traveling in was stopped as part of a routine traffic control; when officers approached the vehicle they noticed a strong marijuana scent.
The men were asked for their ID papers, but the man in the passenger seat –a German national from Dortmund- refused; he was told to exit the car, handed over his jacket for inspection and then bolted. Police officers set chase and noticed that he threw away a stack of money. They managed to catch him shortly after, albeit after a short fight.
When police retrieved searched his body they found more money on him; including the package he threw away he was carrying a total of € 26.585,-. The money was confiscated.
