Three towns merge into one: Gooise Meren

Gooise Meren is what the merged municipality, consisting of Bussum, Naarden and Muiden, will be called. The name Gooise Meren was chosen after a lot of discussion. The municipalities are merging in 2016. The council members of the three municipalities had three names to choose from: Naarden-Bussum, Nardingerland and Gooise Meren. The last was finally chosen because it is the most neutral name. The three names were selected from nearly 400 entries from residents. If the 53 council members were unable to reach a decision, the merged would have been called Bussum, as it is the largest of the three municipalities.
