Rotterdam house firebombed
A Rotterdam home came under attack shortly after midnight on Monday when a firebomb was thrown at a glass window. No casualties have been reported, but the incident is a major cause for concern for residents in the area.
Residents were startled by the sound of glass shattering followed by some loud bangs just after 1:00 a.m. "It was as if heavy fireworks were launched" said 56-year-old neighbor Ronald de Blok to the AD. “I called out and then we heard the fire coming. "
The owners of the property, a 34-year-old man and a 47-year-old woman, were not home at the time of the incident. The targeted home was completely destroyed by the fire, and two adjacent homes had to be evacuated and have suffered severe damage.
Residents of the area have reported that the home frequently attracted criminal activity. "Pretty much everyone here knows that the occupant of the burnt house engages in shady business”, an occupant of Piet van de Polsingel in the Nieuwe Terbregge district told AD. “We’re really very lucky that the fire has not reached to the homes of neighbours and at there were no injuries.”
Police say that the evidence points to arson. An investigation under way.
