Girl, 10, father die in beach rescue attempts
A father and his 10-year old daughter died on Sunday after strong winds caused them to become involved in a string of rescue actions at the beach in Katwijk. According to De Telegraaf, the girl jumped into the water to save another child from drowning. When it looked like she may drown as well, her father jumped in after her. Rescue workers had to pull them out of the sea.
Several ambulances and two trauma helicopters were called in to attempt the rescue. The three swimmers were able to be pulled out of the sea, but the father could no longer be re-animated, he died on the spot.
The girl was brought over to hospital in a worrying state. The Algemeen Dagblad reports that the girl died later that evening. The third swimmer was not injured.
