Walk raises money for Syrian refugees
At midnight on Thursday, the pistol shot sounded for the walk organized by Nacht van de Vluchtelingen (Night of the Refugees) to raise money for Syrian refugees. The walk started in Rotterdam, and ended in The Hague.
Mayor Aboutaleb gave the starting shot, and the first walkers came into The Hague at 6 a.m. Friday morning. Apart from the 1200 sponsored walkers, several well-known Dutch people took part as well. Actor Waldemar Torenstra is ambassador for Night of the Refugees.
The walk hopes to raise money for Syrian refugees who have become victims of the civil war in their country. As of now, an estimated nine million Syrian people fled the country, to escape the violence.
The initiative has raised €460,000 as of now. This money will be spend on emergency aid in Syria, as well as surrounding countries.
