Yacht killer gets 25-year prison term
The man accused of committing a double-homicide in Hoendiep last year was sentenced Thursday to 25 years in prison. The Public Prosecution Authority (OM) earlier demanded 30 years.
The court in Groningen is convicting the homeless culprit, Slef R. (41) from Rotterdam for double-homicide, not murder, because it is believed that he acted on impulse and not premeditated motives.
The couple, Lammert (70) and Marga (68) Wenstra, were attacked on their yacht last year with an 'angular' object. Their bodies were then thrown overboard, only to be discovered in the waters of Hoendiep the following day.
The court believes that the suspect acted purely for financial gains. R. only wanted to have the boat to be able to procure shelter for himself.
It was especially difficult for the surviving relatives of the victims, the court says, as R. was never open about the matter.
