Guards outnumber inmates in prisons

According to figures from the Ministry of Security and Justice, there are more guards and support staff than actual criminals in prisons in The Netherlands. A spokesperson for the Ministry confirms these figures to the Algemeen Dagblad. In total, Dutch prisons are home to 9710 detainees, and 9914 staff members. These staff members are made up of guards, mostly, but also people who teach in prisons or are involved in sporting activities.
