New double-decker train cars coming

Some of the NS double-decker trains will look a lot more modern in two years' time. The 418 cars will become more economical and more comfortable, a spokesperson announced on Monday.

The first-generation double-deckers, the so-called VIRM-double-deckers, who have been traveling on Dutch rails since the 90s, are going to be remodeled. The second floor of these trains will be arranged in such a manner as to invite working and reading with two-seater chairs, while the lower floor will be more informal with lounge benches and benches opposite each other.

The new trains will also receive new screens with travel information and wireless internet. On the lower floor, art will be displayed. The NS is expecting the trains to become 20 percent more economical, with the use of LED lighting, more economical climate control installations and better streamlining. The double-deckers will be managed by NedTrain in Haarlem.

The first remodeled trains are planned to start running at the start of 2016. In 2020, all train cars are planned to be renewed.
