Man dies in police shootout

A man died early this morning after he opened fire on police officers, who then shot back at him. The incident took place in Boekel, in Brabant. Police report that they had received reports of shots in a street around 1.45am and officers went out to inspect; when they arrived on the scene, someone opened fire on them from a house. Apparently he also shot at them from the garden, hiding behind furniture he had thrown out of the house. Around 2.00am one of his bullets hit an officer in the leg. Reinforcement was sent, but the man also continued shooting at the Arrest Unit. They fired back into the house. When the officers were able to enter the house around 4.am , they found the body of the man. Police did not give his name, but assume he is a 45-year-old man from the area. It is not clear if he was killed by a bullet from a police gun. “We are not closing out anything yet,” a police spokesperson said. The officer who was injured was operated upon in a hospital and is doing fine.
