Tweet about Borst causes outrage
Activist group Schokkend-Groningen (Shocking Groningen) posted a critical tweet about recently deceased politician Els Borst.
Many are calling it tasteless, while the activist group has no plans to take down the tweet.
Els Borst died on Monday, under suspect circumstances, at 81 years of age.
On Tuesday, Schokkend-Groningen, who are currently concerned with the earthquakes and gas drilling issues in Groningen, posted: "Els Borst. Terrible, but in Groningen people will soon perish because of the gas drilling and she has also wasted the gas earnings."
Founder of the activist group, John Lanting, admits to the Dagblad van het Noorden that in hindsight the tweet maybe should not have been allowed to be posted. "But I'm not lying awake over it. We shouldn't forget that Borst, as ex-minister, was also guilty of all the problems in the province of Groningen." According to Lanting, the tweet came from emotion.
The group subsequently posted a press report on their Twitter page.
"After the death of madam Borst, she was so praised by everything and everyone that we still wanted to make it clear in a Tweet that we do not agree with all of that. For this, 140 characters are apparently insufficient, and our point came across differently than we had predicted. The Tweet was possibly not formulated well and may not have come at the right moment and we are sorry that this hurts people.
"We would like to leave it at that and are continuing with the gas drilling/earthquake problems."
