Former Minister Els Borst deceased

Former Minister Els Borst passed away Monday night in her home in Bilthoven age 81. The news was confirmed on Twitter by D66 chairman Alexander Pechtold. Police reports state the body of Els Borst was found by a friend, a little after 18:00, in the garage of her residence.

The body was found 'under suspicious circumstances,' said a police informant. Her death could be natural or due to an accident or crime. The area around the house has been cordoned off, and a tent has been set up by the house. Forensic investigation may take several more hours. Els Borst has been a member of D66, almost from the start. After a career as a physician and a hospital CEO, she went on to become the minister of Public Health, during the Kok1 and Kok2 cabinets. Among other things Borst was responsible for the euthanasia Act, a new financing system for health care, and the donor codicil. In 2012 Borst was nominated State Secretary, an honorary title, awarded in exceptional cases to politicians who no longer have a public function.
