Light quake in Drenthe

Residents in Drenthe experienced a small earthquake Wednesday evening around 10:30 pm. The Royal Dutch Meteorological Institute (KNMI) confirms that an earthquake with a magnitude of 2.0 on the richter scale was recorded. The epicenter was in Geelbroek, the KNMI claims, to the south of Assen and in the area of the gas reservoir Eleveld. Since 1986, around twenty earthquakes have been recorded in this area, as a result of gas drilling. According to a spokesperson, around ten reports have come in. The earthquake happened on the evening that the House of Parliament would debate with minister Kamp about natural gas drilling in Groningen.
