PVV: arrest Bouterse in South Africa

The PVV wants Desi Bouterse, President of Suriname, to be placed under arrest if he attends Nelson Mandela's funeral in South Africa. The Dutch government will need the cooperation of South Africa for his arrest and extradition. The issue was raised in parliament by Geert Wilders' party, who questioned prime minister Rutte and minister Timmermans. Bouterse still has a prison sentence of eleven years outstanding in The Netherlands for cocaine trafficking. President_Bouterse

Bouterse announced Tuesday he would attend Mandela's funeral in his capacity of chairman of the Union of South American Nations. He will not travel by way of Schiphol, but by Brazil instead. It's the first time since his son, Dino Bouterse, was arrested in Panama, late August, that the Surinamese head of state will travel abroad. Dino is on trial in the US for drugs and arms trafficking. Under normal circumstances head of states are protected by full immunity, and can not be arrested, but exceptions are possible.
