Probation for baby buyers

The Dutch adoptive parents of the Belgian baby, Donna, were conditionally sentenced to 8 months in prison by the court of Appeal in Gent. The sentence remained the same as that of the court. The Belgian prospective parents, who were initially also convicted, were acquitted. The surrogate mother was sentenced to one year probation, her partner was fined 1650 euros. Justitia

Wikimedia commons Baby Donna was born in Belgium in 2005, and sold by her surrogate mother to a Dutch couple from Leusden. The surrogate mother told the Belgian prospective parents, one of whom was the biological father, that she had a miscarriage. The surrogate mother sold the baby to the Dutch couple because they offered more money. " She was clearly out to gain money and offered the child on the Internet to the highest bidder, " according to the court. The Dutch couple was aware the child has been promised to the Belgian parents. The fact that the child is growing up in a loving environment is considered normal, and not a reason to let the couple go free, according to the court. The lawsuit around baby Donna has been going on for years . The couple from the Netherlands got custody of the child through a Dutch procedure. The sentences imposed are low, because according to the Court of Appeal in Ghent the reasonable period for judicial measures has been exceeded. Baby Donna is now almost 9 years old.
