Fishing nets become underwear

Divers have retrieved over 2 tons of fishing nets from the bottom of the North Sea in the past two years, reports the organization Healthy Seas.Tuesday the collected nets will be taken to a factory in Slovenia. They will be recycled and the nylon-like plastic will be used to manufacture underwear, socks, towels, and rugs. Dutch divers, underwater photographers, and underwater archaeologists participated in the retrieval of the nets. fishing net

In the near future Healthy Seas wants to start retrieving abandoned fishing nets from the Mediterranean and the Adriatic Seas. It is unknown how many nets are at the bottom of the North Sea. Researchers, commissioned by the United Nations, calculated that worldwide 640,000 tons of fishing nets, lines and hooks are scattered in the sea.
