900,000 Visitors Heritage Day

The more than 4000 monuments that could be visited last weekend, as part of the Heritage Day, have drawn 900,000 visitors, the organization reported on Sunday. This weekend was the 27th edition of the Heritage Day and had as the theme ‘Power and Splendor’. So this year extra attention was given to old castles, palaces, canal houses, churches and courts. The organization chose this theme because of the celebration of 200 years of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the celebration of the 300th anniversary of the Treaty of Utrecht. Influential people and institutions have over the centuries built many monuments. On the list of participating monuments were for example Castle Nyenrode in Breukelen and the official residence of the mayor of Amsterdam at the Herengracht. Last year about 925,000 people visited a monument.
