It is possible that over 100 former Defense employees have died as a direct result of working with paint and grit containing the highly toxic and , according to lawyer Rob Bedaux. He is representing around 100 other former Defense employees and will raise this issue in court on Tuesday, the Telegraaf reports.

It is too dangerous to continue working with chromium paint in the outdated spray booth at the Leeuwarden airbase. The carcinogenic substance is not sufficiently disposed of in the Leeuwarden spray booth and that the concentration in the air is sometimes 27 times higher than allowed.

Toxic chromium paint was released during maintenance on an Apache helicopter in Mali. Minister Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert of Defense notified the Chamber that the carcinogenic paint pigments were released during the sanding of the rotor blades.

About 1,250 (former) employees of defense have reported at a special reporting point for people who worked with the carcinogenic chromium paint. More than 350 of them have medical problems ranging from fatigue and high blood pressure to various forms of cancer.
