Screen time is affecting children's sleeping behavior, public health institute RIVM concluded in its first ever study into the effect of smartphones, tablets and televisions on the sleep of kids between the ages of 8 and 18. Because of screen use, children postpone their sleep and go to sleep later. Teenagers sleep an average of 40 minutes less. Teenagers also wake up more often at night and have more difficulty staying awake during the day, RTL Nieuws reports.
A 13-year-old girl from Amsterdam is facing some trouble from her parents and the police on Tuesday. After her father reported her missing on Monday evening, the police found her driving her parents' car on the A4 highway, NOS reports.
While searching for the missing child, police officers noticed an inexperienced driver swerving across the A4 highway near Hoofddorp. "Between 90 and 120 kilometers per hour", a police spokesperson said to NOS.
A teenager and a man were injured in stabbing incidents in The Hague on Wednesday evening. The police believe the stabbings were committed by the same perpetrator and are looking for the man.
At around 7:15 p.m. a 17-year-old boy was stabbed in the arm when he caught a man trying to puncture his bicycle's tire on Van Alkemadelaan. The boy called the police and was taken to hospital for treatment.
Fifteen minutes later, at around 7:30 p.m., a jogger was stabbed multiple times on De Mildestraat. The jogger went to the hospital and later called the police.
The Utrecht police arrested three teenagers on suspicion of mugging school children in Vleuten and Leidsche Rijn. Cycling pupils were mugged multiple times on their way home from school in January. The muggers stole money and belongings, the Telegraaf reports.
Investigation led the police to three boys aged 13, 14 and 16 from Utrecht. They are linked to one of four muggings. Their involvement in the other three crimes is still under investigation.
A 22-year-old man from Etten-Leur was arrested on Sunday night for threatening a 15-year-old boy with a gun. The man threatened the teenager after he scored a goal during a five to five game on Hobodreef in the Noord-Brabant town, the Telegraaf reports.
The police arrested a 14-year-old boy on Monday for taking a firearm to his school in Rotterdam Zuid. The illegal gun belongs to his parents, who were also arrested. The gun was found in a 15-year-old classmate's bag. This boy was also arrested, AD reports.
A spokesperson for the police would not tell AD whether the firearm was loaded, or which school was involved.
The 14-year-old's mother called the school because the boy had the gun over the weekend and she was worried that he took it to school with him. The school then called the police.
The police arrested a sixth suspect on Wednesday for assaulting a 14-year-old boy in Spijkenisse. Like the other five suspects, the boy arrested on Wednesday is underage and from Spijkenisse, NU.nl reports.
The Penta College in Spijkenisse and the Spijkenisse football association suspended a number of teenagers due to an assault on another teenager. Videos of the assault were shared on social media on Monday night. The videos show a boy being attacked by a group of other teenagers.
The attack happened on Friday, according to NOS. The 14-year-old victim sustained a broken nose, a torn earlobe and multiple bruises. The police since arrested five underage boys from Spijkenisse. One of the young suspects' home is getting extra protection as a precaution.
A 15-year-old girl who was hit by a stray bullet during a shooting in Helmond on Monday afternoon, is not doing great. Her physical injuries are not too bad, but mentally she suffered a "big blow", a spokesperson for her school said to RTL Nieuws.
The Public Prosecutor in Spain will demand four years in prison against 17-year-old Dutch teen Charly T. for the sexual abuse of two underage British girls. T. has been in custody in Spain since August last year, after the two girls accused him of getting them drunk and sexually abusing them. When he will stand trial is not yet clear, NOS reports.
A 14-year-old boy was injured in what the police believe was a stabbing at a Zeeman store in Amsterdam Zuidoost on Thursday afternoon. "We assume that there was a stabbing incident", a police spokesperson said to the Telegraaf.
The incident happened around 3:00 p.m. at the Zeeman store on Karspeldreef. The boy was rushed to hospital, where he underwent surgery.
The police will talk to the boy about what happened to him later on Friday. So far no arrests were made.
A 17-year-old boy from Noord-Holland has been in custody in Spain for four months. Two underage British girls accused him of sexual assault, but no official charges have yet been filed against Charly T. The teenager himself denies the girls' accusations, AD reports.
"The Spanish judiciary is pretending I had a terrible Master Plan to get two underage girls drunk and then sexually abuse them. But that is not so. I am not a serious criminal", T. said in a telephone interview with Nieuws en Co on NPO Radio 1.

A 17-year-old girl was injured in a stabbing on Livingstonelaan in Utrecht on Monday. A suspect was arrested shortly after the incident, the Utrecht police said on Twitter.
A trauma helicopter was deployed to provide first aid to the injured girl. She was taken to hospital. The extent of her injuries is not clear, but she was conscious and talking, a spokesperson for the police said to NU.nl.

A 17-year-old boy from Voorst was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of sexually abusing two 9-year-old boys in Empe, the police said in a statement.
On Saturday the police received a report that two children were being harassed in Empe. Investigation led the police to the teenager from Voorst. He is in custody for further investigation.
The police did not give any further information. According to Omroep Gelderland, the incident took place at the Empe primary school.

A boy was stabbed during a large fight between young people in the center of Eindhoven on Tuesday evening. He was found wounded at Eindhoven station a short time after the fight and was taken to hospital, the police said on Twitter.
The victim was rushed to hospital by ambulance, escorted by police cars, according to Omroep Brabant. A trauma helicopter was also deployed, but was unnecessary. At this stage nothing is known about the severity of his injuries. His age was also not revealed.
Two teenagers were arrested on suspicion of arson at the Avans University of Applied Sciences' art academy in Den Bosch on Sunday. An 18-year-old boy from Rosmalen turned himself in on Monday, and a 15-year-old boy from Den Bosch was arrested on Wednesday, the police announced on Thursday.

Some 19 thousand Dutch teenagers drink too many energy drinks and therefore run health risks, public health institute RIVM concluded after a study. State Secretary Paul Blokhuis of Public Health is talking with various organizations about measures, NOS reports.
According to the RIVM, the consumption of energy drinks among teenagers declined over the past years. But about 1 to 2 percent of teens between the ages of 13 and 18 years drink three cans or more per day. They therefore run an increased risk of cardiac arrhythmia and their central nervous system being affected.
State Secretary Paul Blokhuis of Public Health will critically look into the cause of the increased number of suicides in the Netherlands, he said on Tuesday. He wants to know what caused the increase, and whether it is a one-time peak or if something else is going on, NU.nl reports.
The number of teenagers committing suicide in the Netherlands is increasing alarmingly. Last year the number teens who died by suicide nearly doubled, Statistics Netherlands reported on Tuesday.
In total 1,917 people committed suicide in the Netherlands last year, 23 more than in 2016. The number of teens between the ages of 10 and 20 that died by suicide increased from 48 in 2016 to 81 last year.
A 15-year-old boy was hit by a police van while running from the police in Amsterdam on Wednesday evening. The boy got trapped between the van and a fence, NOS reports.
The police noticed the boy dismantling a moped in the bushes near Cornelis Lelylaan. The officers thought that the moped may be stolen, and when the boy took off running the officers got back into their van and gave chase. The boy suddenly appeared in front of the van and the officers couldn't stop in time, according to the police.
