People who flew from the Dutch airports last year, most often flew to London. The most plane passengers traveled from the Netherlands to Heathrow Airport in London. And London was the most popular destination for flights from four of the five national Dutch airports last year, Statistics Netherlands reported on Thursday.

A total of 1.75 million people flew between a Dutch airport and London Heathrow last year. El Prat airport in Barcelona was the second most popular destination with 1.61 million travelers, followed by Dublin with 1.35 million.

Last year, nearly 71 thousand new homes were built and delivered in the Netherlands, over 6 percent more than in 2018 and the biggest increase in a decade, Statistics Netherlands reported on Wednesday. The total housing stock in the Netherlands grew by 0.9 percent last year.

The number of new asylum seekers and people coming to join family members in the Netherlands decreased slightly in 2019 compared to the year before. The number of asylum seekers from Nigeria and Syria increased the most, Statistics Netherlands said on Tuesday based on figures from immigration and naturalization service IND.

Last year, 2 thousand more people applied for asylum in the Netherlands than in 2018, but the number of people joining family members through the family reunification program decreased by 2,300. That brings the total to some 300 fewer than in 2018.

Municipalities in the Netherlands expect to receive 10.8 billion euros in municipal taxes this year, 6.3 percent more than in 2019, Statistics Netherlands reports based on the municipal budgets for 2020. Property tax is increasing nearly 5 percent this year, parking charges are up nearly 10 percent. But it is visitors who will be hit the hardest - tourist tax is increasing 40 percent this year.

In December a total of 9 million residents of the Netherlands had a paying job - the highest number of employed persons in the country to date, Statistics Netherlands reported on Thursday. After a minor increase in the second and third quarter of 2019, unemployment decreased again in the fourth quarter, and the number of active unemployment benefits with it.

Gay and bisexual young people were more than twice as likely to be bullied, stalked or threatened online than their heterosexual counterparts last year, Statistics Netherlands reports based on a survey among 38 thousand internet users between the ages of 12 and 25 years. Among all young people, regardless of sexual orientation, girls were bothered online almost twice as often as boys.

Consumer prices were on average 2.6 percent higher in 2019 than in 2018, the biggest price increase since 2002. The increase was driven by increases in the low VAT rate and energy tax in January last year, according to figures Statistics Netherlands released on Thursday.

A substantial increase in people relocating to the Netherlands pushed the population of the country to 17.4 million people by the end of 2019, the largest population growth in the country since the beginning of the century. Roughly 272,200 people moved to the Netherlands last year, while 157,900 moved out of the country.

Some 16 percent of children in the Netherlands are growing up in a single-parent household, a substantial 48 percent rate increase compared to 20 years ago. Fewer than 11 percent of children lived with one parent back in 1999, and the rate steadily grew over time, according to Statistics Netherlands (CBS).

"This situation can arise because, for example, parents have separated, a parent has died or the parents have never lived together," the statistics office said. Nearly nine-in-ten of the 538 thousand children are registered at the mother's address.

The number of passenger cars in the Netherlands increased by a factor of more than 200 since 1927, Statistics Netherlands reported on Thursday. Then there were 41 thousand cars in the Netherlands. This year the country counted 8.5 million passenger cars. Almost half of Netherlands residents own a car.

According to the stats office, the massive increase is related to the growing population, incomes, and commuter traffic, among other things.

Working from home is becoming increasingly common in the Netherlands. The number of people who work from home at least some of the time increased from 2.8 million in 2013 to 3.3 million last year. That is 37 percent of the employed workforce, according to figures Statistics Netherlands released on Wednesday.

The 19 million residents milestone will likely follow in 2039. By 2060, the Netherlands will count nearly 19.6 million residents, according to the latest forecast by Statistic Netherlands.

Car owners in the Netherlands will pay 147 million euros more in road taxes next year than this year, according to Statistics Netherlands. The increase is partly due to the growing fleet of vehicles, higher rates, and the particulate matter tax that will be implemented. In total, the government and provinces expect to collect almost 6.1 billion euros in road tax in 2020.

The road tax, or motor vehicle tax, consists of a government part and a part collected by the provinces. The government expects to collect 131 million euros more next year, the provinces 16 million euros more.

That amounts to an average of 13 people dying due to a fall per day. Three quarters of the victims were over the age of 80, Statistics Netherlands reported on Wednesday.

The number of cows, bulls and calves in the Netherlands decreased by 3 percent this year to 3.8 million, Statistics Netherlands reported on Friday based on the provisional figures from the Agricultural Census. Both men and women in the Netherlands have grown heavier and slightly taller since 1981, according to Statistics Netherlands' health survey. Between 1981 and 2018, men on average grew 3.8 centimeters taller and 9 kilograms heavier, while women grew 1.5 centimeters taller and 7 kilograms heavier.

That means that men are now an average of 2.3 kilograms heavier per centimeter of body height, and women 4.7 kilograms. According to the stats office, women became "fairly considerably" heavier in the periods 1990 to 2000 and 2010 to 2019, while their height hardly changed.

Accommodations in the Netherlands attracted nearly 10 million tourists during the summer months of July and August this year, 4.4 percent more than in the same months last year. In total these guests accounted for nearly 35 million overnight stays, 7.6 percent more than last year, Statistics Netherlands reported on Monday.

In the third quarter of this year 13,100 housing construction permits were issued, 24 percent less than in the same period last year, according to figures Statistics Netherlands released. This is the third consecutive quarter in which fewer permits were issued than a year earlier. 

Up to and including September, a total of 40 thousand construction permits were issued to build new homes. For comparison, throughout all of 2018 a total of 70 thousand housing construction permits were issued.

Last year the Dutch transport sector emitted 26 billion kilograms of CO2 equivalents of greenhouse gases, almost as much as in 2012. Aviation was responsible for 49 percent of those emissions, water transport for 26 percent, and road transport for 21 percent, according to figures Statistics Netherlands released on Wednesday.
