Rents in the Netherlands continue to rise. In July, the average rents were 2.5 percent higher than in the same month last year. The highest increases happened in Amsterdam and Rotterdam, Statistics Netherlands reported on Wednesday.

The rents of social housing owned by housing corporations increased by 2 percent. Rents for social housing owned by other landlords and rents in free-sector housing both increased by 3.3 percent. In all three categories, the rents increased more than last year.

Of the 190 thousand kids who started secondary education in the 2010/11 school year, girls on average obtained a higher level of diploma than boys seven years later, Statistics Netherlands reported on Tuesday. Girls obtained a HAVO or VWO diploma more often than boys, boys more often obtained a diploma from one of the VMBO vocational courses than girls.

Public transport prices in the Netherlands increased more over the past decade that the costs involved in driving your own car, Statistics Netherlands reported on Monday. In July of this year, public transit prices were 30 percent higher than in 2009. Personal car costs increased by 25 percent in this same period. For comparison, consumer products and -services prices increased by 18 percent in this period. 

In the Netherlands, the amount of money spent on car costs is 10 times higher than that spent on public transit.

The popularity of high-speed electric bikes is skyrocketing in the Netherlands. On July 1st there were 17,200 speed pedelecs in the Netherlands, an increase of almost 62 percent compared to two years ago. These pedelecs - from 'pedal electric cycle' - are particularly popular among people aged 55 and older, Statistics Netherlands reported on Thursday.

Tourists spent a massive 87.5 billion euros in the Netherlands last year, Statistics Netherlands reported on Wednesday. The number of jobs in the tourism sector increased by 27 thousand to 791 thousand jobs. 

Compared to 2017, tourist spending increased by 6.4 percent last year in absolute numbers. Adjusted for price changes, the increase was 4.1 percent.

The number of homeless 18- to 65-year-olds in the Netherlands more than doubled from 17,800 in 2009 to 39,300 last year. The number of homeless people between the ages of 18 and 30 years tripled duirng this period, as has the number of homeless people with a non-Western migration background, Statistics Netherlands reported on Friday.

In the second quarter of this year, 12.8 thousand permits were issued to build new homes - the lowest number in three years and 14 percent less than in the second quarter of 2018, Statistics Netherlands reported on Thursday. The permitted building sum for the new construction and renovations of homes was also nearly 15 percent less than the second quarter of last year.

Freelancers and other workers with a flexible employment relationship on average earn 48 percent less per hour than employees with a permanent contract, Statistics Netherlands reported on Thursday.

This mainly has to do with differences in background characteristics - flexible employees are on average younger and less educated, according to the stats office. If these characteristics are taken into account, freelancers earn 7 percent less than their permanently employed counterparts.

Last year 24 percent of Dutch aged 25 years or older had sleeping problems. That amounts to approximately 2.9 million people who had trouble sleeping last year. In 2017 in was 21 percent, Statistics Netherlands reported on Tuesday.

People who identified themselves as unfit to work to the stats office were far more likely to have trouble sleeping than other groups. 58 percent of people with occupational disabilities had sleeping problems last year, compared to 19 percent of employed Dutch, 35 percent of unemployed Dutch, 32 percent of volunteers, and 23 percent of pensioners.

The life expectancy for 65-year-old people living in the Netherlands increased over the past years, but only for highly educated people. The life expectancy for 65-year-olds with a low level of education remained the same, Statistics Netherlands reported on Friday. Highly educated people are also less likely to have physical limitations and more likely to be healthy for longer.

In the second quarter of this year, the Dutch economy grew by 0.5 percent compared to the first quarter - the same growth as in the previous two quarters. Compared to the second quarter of last year, the Dutch economy grew by 1.8 percent adjusted for the number of working days, Statistics Netherlands reported on Wednesday. The economic growth in the second quarter was higher than expected.

Beach goers are a prime target for pickpockets and other types of thieves. The number of lighter property crimes shows a clear peak along the coast during the summer months. In the 2016 to 2018 period, over a quarter of registered pickpocketing crimes were registered in July and August, Statistics Netherlands reported on Monday.

A total of 2,964 people died during the July week in which a record breaking heatwave hit the Netherlands. That is almost 400 more deaths than in an average summer week, Statistics Netherlands reported based on preliminary figures.

This likely has to do with the United Kingdom's imminent departure from the European Union.

A total of 112 residents of the Netherlands drowned in the country last year, 27 more than in 2017, Statistics Netherlands reported on Monday. The stats office attributes the increase partly to the hot summer of last year. In addition to the Dutch who drowned, a total of 26 non-residents also drowned in the Netherlands last year.

Last year 8.5 percent of Dutch internet users aged 12 years or older fell victim to cybercrime. That amounts to 1.2 million Dutch victims, Statistics Netherlands reported on Wednesday based on a study performed in collaboration with the police. Young people fell victim most often. And the most common type of cyber crime was crime against property - crime in which the perpetrator stole money from the victim, according to the stats office.

More and more owner-occupied homes in the Netherlands are ending up on the rental market. In 2017, almost 100 thousand homes that were not owned by a housing association came to be used as a rental home, Statistics Netherlands reported on Monday.

The number of owner-occupied homes that ended up in the rental market under non-housing association owners, increased significantly over the past years. In 2014 over 62,200 owner-occupied homes became available to rent. In 2017 that number increased to 98,900.
