The rubber granulate used in artificial turf is harmful to the environment in the immediate vicinity of the fields, according to research by public health institute RIVM and the union of water boards UVW. The rubber granules can leak substances that end up in the soil and dredges around the fields, the researchers found, ANP reports.

Athletic events played on artificial turf mixed with rubber granules in the Netherlands does not significantly increase exposure to carcinogenic chemicals, states an unreleased report by Dutch health authority RIVM, according to the Telegraaf. Still, the agency recommends a wider scale international study of the rubber granules, often made by recycling automotive tires, as regulations governing the practice are inconsistent from country to country.

Amsterdam will not accept rubber granules in new artificial turf fields, no matter what the results of the RIVM investigation into whether or not these granules are hazardous to health. The people have lost confidence in the granules, sports alderman Eric van der Burg said during an emergency debate on the matter on Wednesday, Het Parool reports.

A massive 58 out of 60 artificial turfs in the Netherlands containe a higher concentration of carcinogenic substances than are allowed in consumer products, NOS reports based on research by tire industry association VACO. VACO examined 50 artificial turf fields and NOS compared it to studies of another 10.

The Dutch tire industry will reimburse the costs of sports clubs who want to have their artificial turf studied, VACO and Association Band en Milieu announced. Clubs can independently have their turfs tested and the associations will pay them back, ANP reports.
