Dutch roads were significantly busier this summer compared to the same period last year. The traffic severity - the length of a traffic jam multiplied by its duration - increased by 13 percent, the ANWB announced on Wednesday. July was especially busy, ANP reports.

According to the ANWB, the beautiful summer weather caused an increase in recreational traffic. As a result, the roads in Zuid-Holland, Zeeland, Noord-Brabant and Limburg were a lot busier this summer compared to the moderate summer of 2017. The many wildfires also caused extra delays.

Traffic jams in the Netherlands are increasing due to the aging population, according to figures from the ANWB. Traffic jams are especially increasing during evening rush hour due to the large amounts of recreational traffic on the roads, the ANWB concluded by comparing traffic during the first three months of this year with the same period in 2016, the Telegraaf reports.
