People who regularly visit a hospital in the Netherlands spend enormous amounts on parking alone. Some lose more than a thousand euros a year in driving to and parking at the hospital. On average, one day of parking at a hospital in the Netherlands costs 8.93 euros. Amsterdam is most expensive - at the OLVG in Amsterdam Oost, parking costs 48 euros per day, AD reports based on its own research.
The use of camera scanning vehicles by municipalities to issue parking fines resulted in a spectacular increase in the number of such fines. The number of issued fines jumped by dozens of percentage points in many municipalities after they started using these scanning vehicles, AD reports based on figures requested from large Dutch municipalities.
The municipality of Amsterdam is "raising parking fees to improve the quality of life", the city said in a press release on Thursday. From April next year, parking in the city center for an hour will cost 7.50 euros, instead of the current 5 euros per hour. This is the first time parking fees will change in Amsterdam since 2009, according to the city.
Schiphol Airport is the second most expensive airport to park a car for short or long periods in the region, according to website Vliegveldinfo.nl's Fall Report 2015. Only the airport in Brussels, Belgium is more expensive than Schiphol.
