Mosques in the Netherlands are taking extra security measures during Ramadan, which started on Monday. While the Islamic organizations say that they have no indications of an attack or anything else being planned against them, they still worry about incidents, NU.nl reports.
Several hundred people gathered on Dam Square in Amsterdam on Sunday afternoon for a peace event in commemoration of the victims of attacks on two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand on Friday. The event was organized by 13 organizations who want to "send a powerful signal for peace and against terror", NU.nl reports.
On Friday a right-wing extremist man opened fire on two mosques in the New Zealand city. 50 people were killed and dozens were injured.
A banner with insulting text about the Prophet Muhammad was placed at the As-Soennah mosque in The Hague on Sunday morning. Anti-Islam movement Pegida is responsible for the the action, a spokesperson for the movement confirmed to NOS on Sunday afternoon.
Translated from Dutch, the banner read: "Prophet Muhammad children fucker". The banner was accompanied by a mannequin wearing a beard, a robe, a turban, and carrying a baby doll. The mannequin was supposed to show Muhammad "having sex with a baby", Abdelhamid Taheri, an employee of the mosque, said to NOS.
PVV leader Geert Wilders put forward a proposal to ban all forms of Islamic expressions in the Netherlands during the first day of the General Considerations, the parliamentary debate on the government's plans and budget for the next year, on Wednesday. The proposal was immediately shot down by the other parties, NU.nl reports.
The As-Soennah mosque in The Hague wants the authorities to do an in-depth investigation into the death of PVV city councilor Willie Dille. Such an investigation is in the interest of Dutch society and can help prevent further polarization, mosque chairman Abdelhaid Taheri said to newspaper AD.
"In the interests of solidarity and because of the unrest that has arisen, it is important that there is a large investigation into whether her accusations are true or not", Taheri said.
The El Tawheed mosque in Amsterdam-West provided shelter to Muslim extremists, some of whom later joined terrorist organization ISIS, the Telegraaf reports based on a photo. Police sources told the newspaper that the photo shows a director of the mosque with four extremists.
The police responded to mosque Nour on Witte de Withstraat in Amsterdam West on Sunday night to deal with a man waving a knife at the mosque, the police said on Facebook.
At the scene the police arrested the man and confiscated his knife. He seemed to be in a disturbed state and he was transferred to a health care institution.
No one was injured.
Anti-Islam movement Pegida is planing to roast pigs on the spit in front of five mosques during Ramadan. The action is planned for mosques in Arnhem, Gouda, Rotterdam, Utrecht and The Hague, during the evening prayer, AD reports.
