The PvdA and ChristenUnie want a fund to be established for buying the debts of people with major financial problems. Currently people with problematic debts sometimes have dozens of collection agencies hounding them, according to the two parties. With such a fund, they will only have one creditor to deal with NOS reports.
The PvdA and ChristenUnie are teaming up in creating a legislative proposal for stricter rules for the about 600 collection agencies in the Netherlands. Keklik Yucel of the PvdA and Carola Schouten of the ChristenUnie want to tackle the "cowboys who try to earn a lot of money with pressure and intimidation"
The Authority for Consumers and Market is taking debt collection agencies to task for their "dishonest" and "unfair" practices. According to the ACM, collection agencies regularly victimize consumers by confronting them with dishonest claims, with unwarranted costs and unclear accounts and by putting them under unacceptable pressure to pay.
