Edith Schippers will present her report on the exploratory talks with the VVD, CDA, D66 and GroenLinks on forming a cabinet to the Tweede Kamer, the lower house of Dutch parliament, on Monday. Temporary Kamer president Khadija Arib will receive the report at 10:00 a.m., AD reports.
Forming a new government with the election results as they now stand will be quite a chore, the Dutch newspapers expect on Thursday morning, RTL Nieuws reports.
The current coalition government received harsh criticism in the annual Court of Audit report for its inability to solve problems in implementing policies without causing havoc at affected ministries. At its core, the report states that the government wants to achieve much, but puts too little thought into planning and executing policy especially in cases of budget cuts.
The Netherlands has breached the European Union rules on the reception of asylum seekers, such as access for food, clothing and shelter, for undocumented adults, the European Committee of Social Rights (ECSR) states. A Council of Europe human rights committee must now decide whether or not it will take action against the Netherlands based on the harshly critical ECSR report, unless conditions of asylum seekers quickly improve.
Labour party (PvdA) leader Diederik Samson will stay on as party leader until the national elections in 2017. Even if the party would suffer another loss in the upcoming elections in March, Samson will not step down, he stated in an interview on TV program Jinek.
