Dutch business investments fall 3.8% in May
Business investments in the Netherlands decreased for the second consecutive month in May, falling 3.8 percent compared with the same month a year earlier, Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reported. Companies invested less in buildings, infrastructure, and machines than a year earlier while spending more on airplanes.
The decline followed a 3.3 percent drop in April. Investments had risen 2.4 percent in March.
The figures are not adjusted for working days. May 2026 had two fewer working days than May 2025.
Business investments are a key driver of economic growth because they boost productivity, stimulate innovation, and create new jobs. They are closely tied to economic confidence, market demand, and financing costs. High financing costs, such as elevated interest rates, and uncertainty about the geopolitical situation can put pressure on investment.
