Video; Amsterdam police raid Red Light District sites in human trafficking busts
The Amsterdam police conducted multiple raids in Amsterdam’s Red Light District last night as part of a major operation against human trafficking. Several people were arrested, the police said without mentioning exact numbers.
“We understand that many people may have witnessed the police operation and this may have raised questions,” the police said in a brief statement. “In the interest of the ongoing investigation, no additional information can be shared at this time.”
Parool reported that someone was arrested while exercising in a gym on Oosterdok. The police also raided homes and businesses on Oudekerksplein and Oudezijds Achterburgwal, both areas where sex workers work in window brothels.
Officers walking through the Red Light District streets with masked faces, battering rams, and sniffer dogs drew a lot of stares from tourists and locals. Part of the Red Light District was also cordoned off with crime scene tape so that police could conduct an investigation.
The arrested suspects are in restricted custody. This means that they are only allowed contact with their lawyers.
