Dutch doctors report rise in lung and heart illnesses among vapers
Doctors in the Netherlands have reported 24 cases this year of patients with health problems linked to vaping, including lung complaints, heart palpitations, and mental health problems. The number of reports is nearly equal to the total from 2024 and 2025 combined, but according to the RTL, doctors say the true number of affected patients is likely much higher.
The reports involve patients whose doctors consider vaping a certain or likely cause of their health problems. The reporting system was launched by the Dutch Association for Pediatrics and the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment.
The reported cases also show that the health consequences are becoming more severe. Five patients were admitted to intensive care, while five of the 24 patients developed chronic symptoms. For the first time, doctors also reported mental health problems, including depression and school-related problems, among young people.
In 2024 and 2025, the system recorded 34 reports combined, but not all health care professionals were able to submit cases during that period. This year alone, 24 cases have already been reported, said pediatric lung specialist Marije van den Beukel, a co-founder of the reporting system.
Van den Beukel told RTL that the current figures likely represent only a fraction of the problem. “I hope, of course, as a doctor, that it won’t happen, but I do expect it,” Van den Beukel said. “More and more doctors are reporting to us, but certainly not all of them yet.”
The doctor said she believes the strongest measure would be a complete ban on vaping. “I always find this a difficult question, but in my opinion it should be completely banned,” she said. “It is good for nothing, so stop it and quit. Another solution could be to only allow vaping for people over 18 so that children can no longer vape.”
She warned that the effects of vaping extend beyond lung problems. “It is important to warn about this,” Van den Beukel said. “The reports are not only about lung problems, but also about heart palpitations, mental problems, and other health complaints in other organs. Those consequences should not be underestimated.”
