Maastricht man arrested as co-suspect in major child sex abuse material case
A 25-year-old co-suspect was arrested in Maastricht on Monday morning as part of the criminal investigation into 23-year-old Mert A. from Hoofddorp. A. is suspected of possessing and distributing child sexual abuse material, and is also alleged to have coerced young girls into filming themselves self-harming.
In the district court in Rotterdam, the prosecutor stated that the co-suspect was identified as part of the investigation into A.’s online activity.
The suspect from Maastricht faces formal charges of possessing and distributing child abuse imagery. Prosecutors state he had access to a private archive chat containing child sexual abuse material, the same digital space where Mert A. reportedly stored illicit files."
Investigators reviewed over 44,000 images and videos during the probe into A., identifying 1,635 as child sex abuse material. According to the prosecution, the files depict girls aged between 6 and 14 years old. Additionally, authorities uncovered 22 pieces of bestiality media among the suspect's files.
A. allegedly forced young girls to carve his username into their skin or write it on a wall using their own blood. The victims were encouraged to film their actions, with the perpetrators subsequently distributing the footage online. Two individuals with whom A. was in contact have also been arrested in the United States.
While investigators have identified two victims forced to carve the suspect's handle into their skin, both individuals deny that they engaged in self-harm at his request. The prosecution stated that A. belonged to the '764' group, a subgroup of the broader online community 'The Com' a network notorious for circulating hyper-violent content.
A. was taken into custody on October 14 last year and will remain in pre-trial detention for at least the next few months pending psychological and psychiatric assessments.
