Renewable energy share in Netherlands rises to 22.7%, Statistics Netherlands says

Renewable energy consumption rose last year, with more power generated from sources such as wind, solar, and biomass than in the previous year, according to Statistics Netherlands.

In 2025, use of renewable energy increased by 11%, bringing the share of total energy consumption from sustainable sources to 22.7%, up from 20.2% the year before. Biomass accounted for over one-third of total renewable energy consumption, including sources such as wood, organic waste, and biofuels, making it the largest renewable energy category.

Growth was especially strong in transport fuels, with higher use of biodiesel and bio-kerosene. Biodiesel consumption increased by 11% year on year, while bio-kerosene use rose by 50%.

Wind power output rose modestly compared with 2024, increasing by 4%, which marks a slower rate of growth than in earlier years. The limited expansion of wind farms last year contributed to this slowdown. Still, wind energy remained a major source of renewable consumption in the Netherlands, accounting for 30% of all renewable energy used.

Abundant sunshine in 2025 contributed to a sharp rise in solar power generation, which increased by almost 19% compared with the previous year. Solar energy now makes up just under 25% of total renewable energy consumption.
