TU Delft continues to be the Netherlands’ top university in the QS World Rankings
TU Delft continues to be the highest-ranked Dutch university, placing 48th globally and 13th in Europe, according to the British QS World University Rankings 2027, which were published on Thursday. The University of Amsterdam is ranked 60th worldwide and 16th in Europe, while Utrecht University has dropped 10 places.
Overall, the Netherlands has one university in the top 50, another in the top 100, seven more ranked between 101 and 200, three between 201 and 300, and another ranked at 429. Of the 14 Dutch research universities, only the Open University did not make the list.
Ten years ago, twelve Dutch universities appeared in the top 200; today that number has fallen to nine, according to the developers, cited by Utrecht University’s newspaper. Most other Dutch universities have also dropped in the rankings, with the exception of Leiden University—which maintained its position—and VU Amsterdam, which performed slightly better this year.
The top 10 remains dominated by British and American universities. The only exceptions are Switzerland’s ETH Zurich and the National University of Singapore, ranked eighth and tenth, respectively. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States once again holds the top spot, a position it has occupied for 15 years. Imperial College London and Stanford University share second place.
However, rankings such as the QS World University Rankings are often criticized on the grounds that they reduce complex institutions to a single composite score, despite universities being made up of vastly different disciplines, staff profiles, and student populations. As a result, some argue that such comparisons are inherently misleading and should be interpreted with caution or not used at all. Others, however, contend that although imperfect, they still offer a rough but meaningful snapshot of how Dutch universities are positioned in an international context.
