Amsterdam child protection interventions surge, national numbers steady
The Dutch Council for Child Protection (RvdK) conducted nearly the same number of interventions in 2025 as in 2024, according to the council’s latest figures. A total of 41,253 child investigations were carried out last year, just 56 more than the previous year.
Amsterdam recorded the largest increase, with 537 more interventions than in 2024, while Rotterdam saw a decline of 100 interventions.
The council investigates a variety of issues affecting children, including their home environment and school absenteeism, and also coordinates community service orders and other measures for minors.
The rise in 2025 was mainly driven by criminal investigations involving minors. When young people commit offenses, the Dutch Council for Child Protection advises on appropriate measures, which can include community service, juvenile detention, or alternative treatments.
