D66 nominates Eelco Eerenberg as new State Secretary of Finance

Eelco Eerenberg is the new prospective State Secretary of Finance for the D66, the party announced. He is replacing Nathalie van Berkel, who withdrew her candidacy and stepped down as parliamentarian earlier this week after the Volkskrant revealed she had misrepresented her education level on her resume.

Eerenberg, 41, is currently an alderman in Utrecht, responsible for Spatial Planning, Education, and Public Health, among other portfolios. He previously served first as a municipal councilor and then as an alderman in Enschede, where his portfolio included Finance.

The trade journal Binnelands Bestuur twice named him the “best young local administrator.”

“Eelco knows local government inside and out and understands how policy works out for people in practice,” the D66 said about Eerenberg.

The new State Secretary candidate will likely meet with Rob Jetten on Friday. The D66 leader and prospective Prime Minister is currently meeting with all the future members of his Cabinet. The new government will be sworn in on Monday.
