Wintry turn expected tonight, snow possible in northern Netherlands
After a relatively mild afternoon with temperatures peaking at 9°C, a cold front from the northeast is set to bring a wintry shift to the Netherlands this evening. While the southern regions will mostly experience light rain, residents in the northern provinces should prepare for signs of snow.
As a northwesterly wind begins to pull in colder air, the light rain that persisted throughout the day will transition into snow showers overnight. The highest likelihood of snow is in the north, where a light dusting may accumulate on colder surfaces. Lows are expected to fall to 2°C, creating conditions ripe for sleet and wet snow.
Regional forecasts indicate that the school vacation period will start with a chilly weekend, bringing daytime highs of 2–4°C and light to moderate overnight frost.
Snow chances are rising significantly ahead of Sunday, with projections suggesting several centimeters could cover parts of the Netherlands this weekend, extending beyond the north into central and even western regions. The heaviest snowfall is expected later Sunday and could persist for much of the day before potentially changing to rain in the evening.
After Sunday, temperatures are expected to climb back to around 6–8°C, likely leading to widespread melting of any snow by Monday or Tuesday.
Commuters and travelers are advised to remain cautious, as the combination of 92% humidity and dropping temperatures could lead to slippery conditions on the roads by early tomorrow morning.
