Restaurants offer discounts to lure customers out in winter weather

Anyone looking to dine out for cheaper would do best to go this week, as winter weather has prompted several restaurants across the Netherlands to offer discounts to customers, RTL reports.

Casa Chow in Gouda, for example, is offering a 50 percent discount for the rest of the week to customers who enter the word K*TSNEEUW when making a reservation.

Owner Boele Sluijter said he has seen many cancellations and very few new reservations because of the winter weather. As a result, he decided not to open the restaurant on Thursday and maybe Friday. He had only three reservations and personally called the guests who had booked. After those phone calls, two more reservations were canceled.

Under normal circumstances, Casa Chow receives dozens of reservations, sometimes as many as 80, on weekends.

Sluijter said reopening for the rest of the week with discounts is unlikely to generate much additional revenue, but he hopes the promotion will at least generate positive publicity.

He said reservations have begun to come in since the promotion was announced, including bookings from staff members who already receive a standard 25 percent discount. He said that response makes him feel good.

At Ruby Rose and Paloma in Utrecht, meals are also half price. The discount code there is more upbeat: guests must enter the word SNEEUWPRET.

“The city is beautiful with this snow. It’s great for photos and walks, but somewhat less great for restaurants,” the venues, which share the same owner, wrote on Instagram.

Elsewhere in the country, restaurants and other food establishments are also offering significant discounts. In some cases, a second or third meal is being given away for free. However, many establishments have chosen not to open at all.
