Cold, windy New Year’s could make way for weekend snow

A cold and windy New Year’s Eve across the Netherlands could set the stage for snow later in the weekend, weeronline forecasters warn.

Scattered showers are expected Wednesday evening, mainly in the north and east, moving toward Germany. Temperatures will range from 3 to 6 degrees. Most areas will turn dry later in the evening, though brief rain may occur along the North Sea. A mostly cloudy sky will accompany moderate to strong west winds.

During New Year’s celebrations, northern regions—including the Wadden Islands and northern Groningen—face the highest chance of showers. Inland winds will be moderate at 12–16 mph, while coastal areas see stronger west to northwest winds, occasionally reaching 28–32 mph in northern Noord-Holland and on the Wadden Islands.

Temperatures will hover near freezing in Limburg, 1–3 degrees inland, and 4–6 degrees along the coast. Strong winds will make it feel colder, prompting authorities to urge warm winter clothing.

Officials also warn that fireworks could be hazardous in coastal regions due to wind, though the breeze should prevent the dense “firework fog” seen in 2020.

Looking ahead, the first days of 2026 are expected to be wet with strong winds and mostly rain. Inland areas could see winter precipitation, though snow accumulation is unlikely. Colder weather later in the week may bring temporary snow in some areas, with intermittent winter conditions possible through January.
