VVD considers mandatory payments from party leaders amid falling revenue
The VVD is exploring a mandatory contribution from its political leaders as a way to address declining party revenues, party officials confirmed Saturday at a general members’ meeting in Bussum. The meeting also highlighted a strong member preference for recruitment of new members as a priority.
Treasurer Lex Janssen said the party has limited options to cut costs further. “The stretch is over. We have already cut 800,000 euros,” he said. “We don’t have the luxury not to talk about this.” Increasing membership fees is also not an option, as current contributions are already among the highest of any Dutch political party. A final decision on the mandatory contribution is expected by mid-2026.
The party’s income has declined in recent years due to a drop in both membership numbers and seats in the Tweede Kamer, resulting in reduced membership fees and government subsidies. A mandatory contribution from VVD leaders could provide a solution. A 3.5 percent contribution could generate around 2 million euros annually for the party, Janssen said.
However, concerns were raised about the impact on local party branches. Municipal councilors and mayors often contribute financially to local campaigns, and the party must avoid “hollowing out” local chapters, Janssen warned. At the same time, recruiting new members also requires funding.
Several prominent VVD figures spoke in favor of a mandatory contribution. “It simply has to happen,” said Annemarie Jorritsma. “I have no problem with the contribution,” added Health Minister Jan Anthonie Bruijn. Other Dutch parties already require contributions from their leaders.
Not all members agreed. Arthur van Dijk, the King’s Commissioner in Noord-Holland, criticized the approach. He urged the party to address why thousands of members have left before implementing new financial measures. “There is quite a bit of criticism in the party,” Van Dijk said. “Talk to the members before you present proposals.”
