Geminids meteor shower lights up the sky this Saturday evening

The Geminids meteor shower is expected to peak during the evening hours of Saturday, leading into Sunday. With the moon in a favorable phase, observers in the darkest areas may see up to 85–100 meteors per hour. In urban areas, 20–30 meteors per hour could still be visible.

The optimal viewing time for the meteors is Saturday evening. At first, the light cloud cover will still allow them to be seen. Viewing conditions may be challenging, as clouds are set to thicken quickly on Saturday evening, with mist potentially forming in the east where winds are light.

Later in the night, the growing cloud cover will significantly limit visibility. To view the Geminids, find a dark spot away from artificial lights.

Overcast and gray conditions are expected as moist air moves in between a high-pressure and low-pressure area on Friday. Temperatures will reach about 10 °C, with a light to moderate wind from the south. Overnight, a cold front occlusion will move across the region.

From around noon on Saturday, the west and north of the country will enjoy mild and sunny weather, while the far east and southeast will experience extended cloud cover. This will come after light rain and will mark the start of the morning.

Conditions are generally favorable for Christmas markets, though Maastricht will not see clear skies until after sunset. Temperatures will reach 9 to 10 °C with light to moderate winds from the southwest, making for pleasant conditions.

Sunday will be predominantly cloudy, with limited sunshine, yet remaining dry. Temperatures will reach about 8 °C, cooler than before. The southwest wind will be fairly strong, force 3 to 4 inland and 5 to 6 along the coast, with gusts over the Wadden Sea. The sun may appear in the northern regions during the morning, with the southern areas seeing some sun in the afternoon.
