Netherlands advises tourists not to visit parts of Thailand, Cambodia & Myanmar

The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs warned Tuesday that travel to Thailand and the Cambodian border region is highly dangerous amid renewed fighting. The warning also covers the Myanmar-Thai border region.

The ministry designated the 20-kilometer zone along the Thai-Cambodian border as “red,” meaning Dutch citizens should not travel there under any circumstances.

Thailand’s southernmost regions bordering Myanmar carry an “orange” advisory, while the rest of the country is “yellow,” allowing travel with caution.

In Cambodia, the border zone with Thailand is also “red,” while the rest of the country is “yellow,” signaling that travel is possible but with heightened alert. Citizens are urged to register for the ministry’s emergency information service and prepare for emergencies.

The warning coincides with renewed clashes along the Thai-Cambodian border on December 8. Cambodia reported nine civilians killed and 20 injured, while Thailand confirmed four soldiers dead and 68 wounded, according to Al Jazeera.

Both countries blame each other for the fighting. Thousands have fled their homes, with temporary shelters established in Buriram and other eastern provinces.
