Rotterdam man released from jail for dangerous driving then runs over two pedestrians
A 37-year-old man from Rotterdam led police on a wild car chase on Tuesday in which two people were struck, and several cars were damaged. The man had his driver's license taken away with his arrest on Monday for dangerous driving behavior. He sped off in a relative’s car while the relative was speaking to the police a day later.
The chase took around 20 minutes. The man sped off in the vehicle with police chasing him through the Doelwater and Coolsingel in Rotterdam city center and towards Rotterdam-Zuid.
Two civilians were hit by the man in the vehicle. The first victim was struck on the Coolsingel/Doelwater junction. He was injured, but needed no emergency aid. The second victim was a man on a mobility scooter. He sustained injuries in the incident and was examined by ambulance staff.
In addition to the victims, the man hit several parked and moving vehicles, which were damaged in the collisions. The chase ended on the Polderlaan-Noordpolderstraat intersection when the suspect hit a police vehicle. He was then blocked in and arrested. No officers were injured.
Authorities are asking anyone who saw the incident, had to dodge, or owns a damaged car to report it to the police.
