Dutch exports to Suriname surge almost 20% since last year

The Netherlands exported 128.4 million euros worth of goods to Suriname in the first half of 2025, a 19 percent increase from the same period last year and nearly the highest level ever recorded, Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reported. Only the first half of 2022 saw slightly higher exports.

Suriname now accounts for its largest share of Dutch exports to South America since 2020 and is the sixth most important South American market for Dutch goods.

The growth was largely driven by machinery and transport equipment, including tankers, pumps for liquids, and construction machinery, which rose by 11 million euros to 45.1 million euros — the highest since 2015.

Food products and live animals also contributed to the increase, reaching a record 33.5 million euros. Other areas, such as chemicals, manufactured goods, and miscellaneous products, also saw moderate gains.

While exports to Suriname have grown, the Netherlands’ share of Suriname’s total imports has been falling. In 2024, Dutch goods made up 11.7 percent of Suriname’s imports, down for the third year in a row.

Over the past decade, Dutch exports to Suriname have fluctuated, ranging from 65.9 million euros to 130.8 million euros in the first half of each year.
