Police shooting in Rozenburg stemmed from a mental health crisis call

The police officers who shot and killed a 30-year-old man in Rozenburg Friday evening were responding at the request of the GGZ mental health crisis service, the Public Prosecution Service (OM) confirmed.

Police shot and killed a man Friday evening inside a fourth-floor apartment in Rozenburg after he tried to attack them with a knife, Rotterdam police reported on X.

The GGZ crisis service provides urgent assistance to people experiencing psychiatric problems or addictions. When situations escalate, the service can request police intervention to protect both the individual and others.

Details about what prompted the crisis call have not been released. The National Police Internal Investigations Department (Rijksrecherche) is conducting the investigation, as is standard when an officer is involved in a deadly incident.
