VVD considers 3.5% salary contribution from members to party amid funding shortfall
The conservative-liberal VVD is considering asking its politicians to contribute part of their salaries to the party as it faces mounting financial pressure, De Telegraaf reports. The plan would affect mayors, ministers, aldermen, and other officials, asking for a contribution of 3.5 percent of their gross income, according to party documents.
The proposed contributions are expected to raise around two million euros, which the party reportedly plans to use for election campaigns, training, and recruitment.
The VVD has seen its revenue decline sharply in recent years. Like other parties, it relies on membership fees, donations, and government subsidies, which depend on the party’s size. After several electoral setbacks, including the loss of ten seats in 2023, party income has fallen significantly.
“Besides measures already taken, such as budget cuts, collaboration with our parliamentary groups, and the scientific bureau, more is needed to prevent further erosion of the party,” the internal document states.
The proposal will be presented to members at a special meeting in Bussum. The idea mirrors arrangements in other parties, including the SP, D66, CDA, and GroenLinks-PvdA, where officials contribute part of their salaries.
