Damage caused by storm Benjamin seems limited; Mostly fallen trees, blown off roof tiles
Storm Benjamin raged across the Netherlands overnight, but it seems to have caused only limited damage. As far as is known, no one got hurt. Damage reports primarily involved fallen trees and damage to facades and roofs.
The Noord-Holland Noord region seems to have suffered the most damage. Veiligheidsregio Noord-Holland Noord told ANP that there had been “quite a few” reports and “many fire department deployments related to storm damage.”
The other security regions, responsible for the local emergency services, reported fewer reports to the news wire. The Amsterdam-Amstelland region had received only one storm damage report by 8:00 p.m. Veiligheidsregio Haaglanden had received about 20, with a spokesperson calling it “relatively quiet.” The Rijnmond region said that it was “a bit busier than usual,” but “nothing we can’t handle.”
Storm Benjamin crossed the Netherlands from the southwest along the Dutch coast towards the Wadden Sea. The KNMI issued a code orange warning for the western coastal provinces. It lapsed at 3:06 a.m.
The wind will continue dying down as the day progresses, but Friday and the weekend will have stormy autumn weather with occasional showers. Friday afternoon may have some sunny spells, and maximums will climb to around 13 degrees. By late afternoon, only the Wadden Islands will still be dealing with strong winds, the KNMI expects.
The weekend will still be quite windy and rainy, but the weather will gradually turn drier in the new week. Maximums will be around the long-term average of 13 degrees Celsius, climbing slightly later next week.
