Groningen facility for intellectually disabled suspends worker over sexual misconduct
De Zijlen, a care institution for people with intellectual disabilities in Tolbert, has placed an employee on administrative leave following a report of sexually inappropriate behavior, the organization confirmed to RTL. An independent investigation has been launched “to clarify exactly what happened and who was involved,” according to a statement from the institution.
The details of the allegation have not been disclosed. “We understand that this news raises strong emotions and concerns among clients, family members, and staff,” said Eric Zwennis, a director at De Zijlen. “De Zijlen takes every report of sexually inappropriate behavior extremely seriously. This touches the core of who we are and what we stand for.”
The Health and Youth Care Inspectorate has been informed of the situation. De Zijlen also invited family members to discuss the incident.
The case follows recent scrutiny of De Zijlen employees who were reported to have humiliated residents on social media.
De Zijlen operates multiple facilities, including the location in Tolbert, which is part of the municipality of Westerkwartier. The institution provides care and support for individuals with intellectual disabilities across its sites.
